About Kent Smith

I have my own consulting company Kent N Smith Consulting Services and presently working at Duke Energy on a special project to enhance Duke Energy’s Generator Monitoring program to include the latest technologies in online monitoring and Artificial Intelligence techniques. He has a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering – Power Generation and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence both from the University of South Florida. He spent 6 years in the Navy and has 40 years in the Utility business (11 with General Public Utilities Nuclear and 29 years with Florida Power / Progress Energy / Duke Energy). He has performed roles in the craft (electrician, Radiation Instrument Technician, Instrument & control technician), craft support (work order planner, shop scheduler), craft supervision (shop supervisor, group superintendent), engineering (nuclear electrical system owner, fossil regional engineer, Generator Specialist). and engineering supervision (Nuclear System Engineering Supervisor, Generation Engineering Manager, FHO Relay Maintenance Manager). His hobbies are taking his fishing poles for a boat ride and hanging out at the local waterfront restaurants. He has been instrumental in development of a continuous EMI monitoring system that is installed at 15 different Duke Energy sites and commercially available.

General comments and observations

I have some knowledge of stator cores also but would not consider myself a core designer or expert. I have been involved in core failure analysis from an operational viewpoint. I would say the same about relay operation. I am not a relay settings engineer but have been involved in failure analysis of voltage regulators/exciters, generators, isolated phase bus and transformers with relay data being one piece of the analysis process.

Generator Areas of Special Skill

  • Field windings
  • Stator windings
  • Excitation systems
  • Failure root cause
  • Inspection
  • Testing
  • Maintenance/Repairs
  • Relaying, instrumentation, etc.
  • Other – Electromagnetic Interference Signature Analysis

Availability

  • Onsite
  • Remote Assistance
  • Work onsite presently must be outside of Duke work hours, remote or during vacation time from Duke.
