Support for turbine end users in the South America facing changing market conditions, operating profiles, and supply chain challenges will arrive in September with a technical conference focusing on issues and concerns related to HRSGs, boilers and CCGT operations. With the assistance of partner organizations Power Users, EPRI, IAPWS, and Combined Cycle Journal; HRSG Forum América Latina rapidly mobilized and will host its first event from September 23 to 25, 2025, at the Blue Tree Premium Morumbi Hotel in São Paulo, Brazil.
This event, conducted in English, is designed for professionals involved in the design, procurement, management, operation, and maintenance of power generation plants incorporating heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and boilers. The primary objective is to advance technical expertise and industry knowledge, ensuring equipment reliability while minimizing operational costs. There will be in-depth training sessions, case studies, and presentations with a focus on technological innovation from GE Vernova, Dekomte de Temple, Arnold Group, Tuff Tube Transition, HRST, and Precision Iceblast Corp.
The program is in development by an international steering committee of engineers and consultants with deep knowledge and expertise on steam systems, CCGT operational challenges, high-energy piping, and cycle chemistry. They are:
- Júlio Paulin, Petróleo Brasileiro S.A.
- Luiz Cortez, Âmbar Energia
- Willians Nunes, Eneva
- Bob Anderson, Moderator, Competitive Power
- Barry Dooley, Moderator, Structural Integrity Associates
- Thomas Sambor, EPRI
Key Topics
The HRSG Forum América Latina will feature in-depth discussions on critical topics related to boiler and HRSG operation, maintenance, and optimization. Below are some of the key areas of focus:
1. Boiler and HRSG Tube Failure Reduction
This session will explore essential strategies for reducing boiler and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) tube failures, emphasizing the importance of understanding failure mechanisms and root causes. Key aspects include:
- Mechanisms and root causes of tube failures
- Availability indicators for Boiler Tube Failures (BTF) and HRSG Tube Failures (HTF)
- The necessity of a corporate mandate for failure reduction programs
- Integration of cycle chemistry into failure prevention strategies
- Red and Green Days: Understanding their significance in evaluating plant operation and maintenance practices
- Revitalizing forgotten tube failure reduction programs that have been neglected over the last 20 years
2. Basic Features for the Optimum Cycle Chemistry for Boilers and HRSGs
This session will provide essential guidance on achieving optimal cycle chemistry, incorporating key features such as:
- Instrumentation and monitoring strategies
- Corrosion product monitoring and deposit sampling
- Carryover detection and prevention
- Statistical insights into common failures and cycle chemistry mismanagement
- Industry trends and areas where cycle chemistry is failing
3. Understanding & Controlling Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) in Boilers and HRSGs
FAC remains a significant challenge in boilers and HRSGs, leading to severe component degradation. This session will cover:
- Mechanisms and morphologies of FAC
- Typical locations of FAC occurrences
- Solutions and best practices to mitigate FAC
- Proactive monitoring and maintenance approaches
4. Application of Film-Forming Substances (FFS) in Boilers and HRSGs
Film-Forming Substances (FFS) have gained popularity, particularly in Brazil and South America, where they are frequently used in industrial plants such as chemical and paper facilities. This session will focus on:
- Understanding FFS and their chemical properties
- Applications and benefits in boiler and HRSG cycle chemistry
- Best practices for FFS implementation
- Case studies from industrial applications
These discussions will provide practical insights into improving plant efficiency, reducing downtime, and enhancing the reliability of boiler and HRSG operations. Other critical topics include:
The conference will cover a wide range of critical topics, including:
- Material selection and new material applications
- Plant control system optimization
- Environmental considerations
- Fast-start HRSGs
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of large valves
- Reliability improvements in steam turbine bypass systems
- Balance of plant, including the steam turbine, condenser, and air-cooled condenser
